Situation

A workforce program built to lead, not just tick over

A global consumer health leader set out to rewire how it engaged, governed and optimized its external workforce after a major restructure.

In late 2024, the business partnered with Vertage, choosing a hybrid delivery model to connect talent access, supply-chain ownership, services procurement and workforce governance.

As the partnership took shape, the brief shifted. This was not transactional MSP delivery. The business needed strategic counsel and a future-ready workforce model built for flexible access to talent and project-based outcomes.

The programme launched at pace, going live globally on January 1, 2025. The remit spanned major geographies and covered agency workers, services procurement and statement-of-work engagements.

Operating across more than £115m of the clients' contingent and services spend, this was a globally coordinated, UK-led model built to handle high operational demand from day one.

The goal: a unified, modern workforce program built for transparency, cost leadership, risk mitigation and operational excellence.

Challenge

  • Global visibility, control, compliance: The existing model lacked the structure to compete with global complexity. Scaling it meant rewiring how the business approached workforce governance.
  • One team, one standard of control: The business needed a single global team with consistent control over a workforce operating in countries with different regulatory environments.
  • Talent without the paperwork: Flexible access to talent and project-based outcomes across contingent labor, services procurement and SOW was vital. An operating model to pinpoint talent, not just process transactions, was vital.
  • A legacy model, running out of road: The incumbent MSP ran on 150+ auto-notification categories, inconsistent change requests and a fractured experience across 14,000+ annual service actions. Misclassified engagements, a fragmented supplier base and weak governance added further risk. The rewire needed to land fast, across countries, without compromising compliance.

Solution

Rebuilt at speed. Governed for scale.

A fast, multi-country build: Vertage delivered a rapid transition across the UK, US, Canada, Puerto Rico and Italy, completing discovery and cutover in six weeks. The rewire covered ≈12,000 worker transitions and a redesigned SAP Fieldglass configuration to simplify routing and integrate SOW management.

Extended hyper-care ran throughout Q1 to safeguard a smooth global launch. The team resolved 4,000+ ServiceNow tickets, stabilizing workflows and removing friction for hiring managers everywhere, while driving continuous improvement across the program.

Governance and supply chain, rebuilt: Vertage rebuilt the governance and supply-chain structure from the ground up, to accelerate control, reduce risk and improve outcomes:

  • Supplier rationalization: 70+ suppliers consolidated into one managed supply chain
  • Clear engagement routes: Spanning contingent, SOW and services procurement
  • Worker reclassification: 150+ workers moved into compliant engagement types, one of the most significant risk-mitigation efforts
  • Audit remediation: 100+ items supported or remediated across 12+ global audits
  • Supplier governance: An annual regional review now drives correct classification, sharper visibility, cost reduction and risk mitigation
  • Screening redesign: UK agency worker screening relaunched, tighter control to move work forward
  • SOW change framework: Supplier-driven drafting replaced with a collaborative, technology-enabled process

Together, these changes built a stronger, more strategic supplier ecosystem, fully aligned with governance standards and risk approach.

Operational efficiency, end-to-end: The program delivered major efficiency gains across every part of the operating model. A small, specialist team fulfilled 14,250+ service actions in 2025, easing the load on local hiring teams and sharpening cycle times. 150+ auto-notification categories were rationalized, cutting noise and lifting manager action rates.

SOW change requests were cut by 40%. Supplier invoice submission time reduced by 60%. VMS approval workflows were optimized business-wide, delivering transparent, role-appropriate visibility.

Expertise that lifts ambition: A trusted advisor to stakeholders across the business, Vertage triages demand and surfaces the right route to talent with precision, at pace. Shaping decisions across contingent labor, Services Procurement and SOW, our expertise powers teams to reach scarce capability and deliver project-based outcomes, sharpening transparency and workflow design along the way.

The result: confident decisions, faster delivery and a compliant, future-ready workforce capability across the business.

Built to keep evolving: A shared commitment keeps investment flowing into the program beyond the core model, via targeted hiring manager campaigns, new program identity and roadshows to drive momentum.

The result: deeper alignment to the long-term transformation roadmap. A model built not just to run, but to evolve.
